A new approach to your hygiene appointment
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a sophisticated teeth cleaning treatment far superior to the traditional dental “scale and polish”.
The soft layer on your teeth has millions of different bacteria, good and bad ones. They thrive in your mouth and feed on the food you eat, especially sugar. This mass of bacteria is oral biofilm (dental plaque). Biofilm grows every day and is barely visible to the naked eye.
Biofilm is the main cause of tooth decay (caries), gum disease (periodontitis) and even tooth loss.
GBT is a state of the art, minimally invasive and effective method of removing biofilm that is comfortable, and as it uses warm water it reduces sensitivity for many patients.
What to expect at your GBT appointment?
- Examination of your gums – we will examine and gently probe your gums for any signs of bleeding or gum disease.
- Disclose – because biofilm is difficult to see you may be unaware of its presence until it has caused damage or disease. For this reason, it is logical that we make it visible by disclosing it. Using a dye, we will show you where in the mouth the plaque is.
- Oral hygiene instruction – By demonstrating brush techniques and what to use in between your teeth we aim to help you keep your mouth as healthy as possible at home.
- EMS Airflow – The airflow method combines a fine powder and a high-powered warm water jet which painlessly removes all the accessible biofilm, stains and early calculus from around the tooth.
- Piezon – Should any hard calculus remain, this will then be removed using a piezon scaler, which again uses warm water making it a comfortable experience. Calculus is highly mineralised hardened plaque which needs an extra final stage to remove. You can prevent this build up at home with excellent daily plaque removal.
