We use periodontal maintenance to effectively clean away plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. It’s used to treat gum disease that has progressed to periodontal disease and has caused bone loss, open spaces in between teeth and exposed roots.
This treatment is only used if you have periodontitis, the more severe stage of gum disease. It helps delay and prevent the condition from progressing. Periodontal disease has been linked to a number of conditions, such as heart disease, Crohn’s and diabetes.
What does maintenance involve?
We clean the teeth with special equipment including ultrasonic cleaning instruments. It’s a non-surgical procedure that depends on the severity of the condition. We will need to see you for regular intervals to keep on top of the condition as once there has been damage to the gum tissue and supporting bone, the condition needs to be managed to prevent tooth loss.
We can prescribe antibiotics if they are required.
